bassanio refuses gold because he know that everything that shines is actually not gold and he refuses silver because silver was a metal in every mans hand which was used a medium to exchange in return of goods they wanted but he selected the lead casket because he was ready to give everything he had for his love and he had faith in the led casket which according to him was a representation of the world which does not look good but is beautiful. hope my answer is helpful..
