What was the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi to uplift Dalits?

Mahatma Gandhi did many works for the upliftment of Dalit society. The Congress party to which Mahatma Gandhi was associated at that time had neglected the Dalit society, but Mahatma Gandhi helped the Dalits to move forward. He named the Dalits as Harijans and did many works for their upliftment.

He ensured the entry of Dalits into the temple, because earlier they were not allowed to enter the temples by calling them untouchables. Apart from this, he ensured Dalit entry in public places like public wells, ponds, roads, schools etc. He himself cleaned the toilet to make the cleaning work dignified. He urged the upper caste people of Hindu society to adopt Dalits and to eradicate discrimination.
