Hindu is a term both used to refer people who follow Hinduism and those who live beyond the Indus River. The term is mostly used for the follower of Hindu religion (Sanatan Dharma). The later definition is loosely used today.

Hinduism is not an organised religion. It is a multiple belief system originated in Indian subcontinent thousands of years ago. You can not say whether its polytheistic or monotheistic or atheistic.

Islam on the other hand is an Arabic origin middle east based religion established by an Arab prophet Hazrat Mohammad. Islam was founded on the land of Arabian peninsula which was a land of multiple religious groups before the arrival of Islam. After establishment of Islam the Arabs became united under a single philosophy named Islam. (Submission to One God).

Islam is a monotheistic religion extremely similar to its cousin religion Judaism and also similar to another cousin Christianity to some extent. Those who follow Islam are called Muslims (Those who submits before One God). Muslims believe every child is a Muslim when born but later become adherents to other religions.

A Hindu and a Muslim have vast religious cultural differences. Muslim is religiously indoctrinated not to go near to polytheism. A Hindu is a polytheist or he can be monotheist. If a Hindu worships idols of God then a Muslim is not advised to mix with idolaters. It doesn't mean a Muslim is asked to have hatred for the Hindu but a Muslim is asked to hate the practice of polytheism and idolatry.

A Muslim can be called a Hindu if he is born in Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh). It refers to the ethnic and racial identity of people living beyond Indus and Ganges river.

A Hindu however can not be called Muslim if he doesn't believe in Islam and its prophet Hazrat Mohammad.

Hindus have reservation while eating beef, cow meat but Muslims don't.

Hindus put vermillion on forehead, Muslims Don't.

Muslims wear special round cap on head, Hindus don't.

Muslims grow long beard but most Hindus don't. This however is not solely an identity of Muslims. Jews and Sikhs also grow long beard.

Hindus say namaste or nomoshkar while Muslims say Salam or Assalamu alaikum. While meeting with non-Muslims Muslims say Adaab.

Muslims used a lot of words originated in Arabia and Iran. Hindus say a lot of words originated in Sanskrit language.

Hindus have no reservation of Music in religious function however Muslims have strict prohibition of Music in religious functions but its allowed in social gathering if its in moderation.

Muslims and Hindus are religiously different but Muslims of Indian subcontinent are very closely aligned genetically and ethnically with Hindus.
