Answer: the doctrine of lapse was an annexation policy devised by Lord Dalhousie, the governor of India between 1848- 1856. the rulers of princely states under a subsidiary alliance with the British and those without a natural heir to the throne had to take permission from the British to adopt an heir. the British had the right to deny such an adoption. the company annexed the princely states of Satara, Jaipur, Sambalpur, Nagpur Jhansi, and awadh using this doctrine of lapse
