The doctrine of lapse was a policy of annexation initiated by British East India company in India in relation to princely states and applied in year 1859. Two years after company rule was succeeded by the British Raj. Doctrine of lapse was the pro-imperialist approach to expand the realm of British kingdom in India. It means that if an ruler or emperor had no real boy child of his own then he has to give his territory to Bristish and no adoption would be done.

It was introduced by Dalhousie who was the governer general, it was used by him to annex the independent Indian States. It was basically an idea to annex those states which have no hierarchical means states they get lapsed the right of ruling and it will not be converted by adoption.
