The economic situation of France at the time of Louis XVI was very drastic as France had to pay a lot of debts taken from other countries. France has put almost all its treasury in getting the independence of the 13 colonies of America. The population of France was also growing. People were unemployed, and hunger spread around the country. Some historians also say that the previous generations of King Louis XVI were also a part and parcel of this economic condition of France as they wasted money for their comforts as well. That is when many people remember that when the bread riots in France were going on (because of the increased prices) Queen Marie Antoinette said to the people of France that “If bread is expensive, then have cake”. This shows the irresponsibility of both the King and the Queen of France.
