Pathshala is an old fashioned system of education.
Explanation:
- It was a flexible education system where there was no fixed tuition fee, printed textbooks, timetable, scheduled exams, etc.,
- According to the surveys conducted by the Scottish missionary, William Adam, in the 1930s, there were more than one lakh pathshalas in Bihar and Bengal and each of them had no more than 20 students.
- In this system, the tuition fee was payable according to the income earned by the parents. The wealthy paid regular fees whereas the people who couldn't afford paid how much ever they could. The teaching was done orally and the syllabus was decided by the head or guru, as per the need of each and every individual student.
