What was the effect of bad weather on the ship

I sailed for a long time in bad waters, I felt like I was in the middle of a hurricane. At one point the compass went crazy, started to rotate quickly, no longer recognizing the cardinal points. The rudder could not be abandoned, because it would have turned quickly, making you lose your way.
I heard noises coming from under the hold, but I did not pay much attention to it, as I was busy keeping my course to prevent my vessel from being dragged to even worse waters. So from one moment to the other my boat sank.
In another situation something similar happened, when I heard noises coming from the hold, I immediately jumped into the water to see if there was any rock underneath me, but nothing ...
So, what I wonder is: can the stormy sea damage the boat? (Was it a bug repeated twice?)
Did any of you find other "problems" navigating the storm?
