What was the effect of the Kalinga war on Ashoka?

Kalinga war was a very significant event in life of Ashoka which shaped and influenced his future conduct. As stated in 13th major rock edict of Ashoka, he was deeply saddened by the huge loss of lives in Kalinga war and gave up bloodshed and violence.
