Battle of Plassey is the most important war for the British as it gave them an distinct advantage over their competitors i.e. French and the Dutch. Siraj-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Bengal was defeated though he had a 50,000 strong force. Mir Jafar, the general of the Nawab’s forces had a secret understanding with Robert Clive. After the Battle of Plassey

Siraj-ud-Daula was captured and murdered by Mir Jafar’s son, Miran

Mir Jafar became Nawab of Bengal

He gave large sums of money to British and the zamindari of 24 parganas to the British

The battle established the military supremacy of the British in Bengal. Sovereignity of the British in Calcutta was recognised. This city went on to become the capital of British in India till 1911.

The British posted a resident at the Nawab’s court and Robert Clive ruled by proxy
