What was the estate general ?why did louis 16 summon the estate general

Estate general was a meeting of the three estates - the nobles, the church and third estate. This meeting was held after a long time (after hundred years) to raise the taxes so that the king's treasure should get filled as it was empty by the wars fought by France.
