  • In the dry, hard winter months, several Mormons died when they walked to Utah through the Rocky Mountains. In crossing the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, the Mormons used many paths to the inland salt sea.
  • The Mormons set out from Nauvoo in  the year April 1846, however were forced to spend many months camped along the Missouri River between Nebraska and Iowa.
  • After the violence, these settlers needed an isolating place so the Great Salt Lake Valley looked perfect. They grew potatoes and turnips immediately, had constructed a dam and had a ceremony to devote the region to being their "Promised Land." Nearly 2000 Mormons migrated into the Great Salt Lake Valley by the end of 1847. The day they arrived in Utah is still celebrated today.
