The first land plants appeared around 470 million years ago, during the Ordovician period, when life was diversifying rapidly. They were non-vascular plants, like mosses and liverworts, that didn't have deep roots.Earliest harvestmen, mites, hexapods (springtails) and ammonoids. The first known tetrapod tracks on land. By the start of the Carboniferous Period, the Earth begins to resemble its present state. It appeared about 575 million years ago.

The red algae called Bangiomorpha, dated at 1.2 Ga, is the earliest known organism that certainly has differentiated, specialized cells, and is also the oldest known sexually reproducing organism. The 1.43 billion-year-old fossils interpreted as fungi appear to have been multicellular with differentiated cells.
