Mughal empire fell from its hay days with the death of last “Great” Mughal Aurungzeb in 1707 AD , who ruled almost all of Indian landmass ( including Pakistan) . His Son was the last mughal to cross river Narmada ( A river in central India ) , normally considered dividing line between Northern plains and southern plateau , and make a foray in southern India . Sikhs and Marathas got too powerful for Mughals and encroached from southern and north western direction , constricting the mughal rule around Delhi and plains of Ganga and Yamuna river. Many erstwhile Mughal governors took the oppurtunity and carved out their own kingdoms out of dying Mughal Kingdom . After the battle of Buxor ( 1764 AD ) Mughal king Shah Alam Surrendered to British and he lost almost everything except Delhi and its suburbs , leading to famous saying of that era kind of mocking the King
