When British government responded with a policy of brutal repression against the Civil Disobedience Movement, Mahatama Gandhiji decided to call off the movement. He entered into a pact with Lord Irwin on 5°” March 1931. Under this pact , Gandhiji consented to participate in a Round Table Conference in London.

The Gandhi-Irwin Pact took place on the 5th of March 1931 between Gandhi, representing the banned Congress party and Irwin, representing the British Empire or British Raj Government of India.

Gandhi was already working towards the freedom of India while the British Government had agreed to Give India the Status of a 'dominion' of the British Empire. Due to the continued struggle for an Independent India, many of Gandhis supporters were in Jail and his party was completely banned.

E.g. the terms and conditions of the pact were eventually agreed between asked  Gandhi and Irvine as follows

1. Discontinue the civil disobedience movement
2. Releasing of all Political Prisoners
3. Free permits to collect salts near coast lines
4. Lifting Ban on the Congress

Among many other agreements
2.

Irwin sought to come to equal terms with Gandhi, but his moves eventually gave more freedom to the freedom fighters and greatly enhanced in the eventual 1947 independence of the country.
