In the beginning of the nineteenth century, the American Anti-Slavery Association was one of the most influential abolitionist organisations.

EXPLANATION:

The 'American Anti-Slavery Society' was founded in '1833' by abolitionists 'Arthur Tappan', 'Lewis Tappan', and 'Theodore Weld'. The men created a national organization to carry their cause on to the level of local and state anti-slavery organizations, including the Ohio Anti-Slavery Society. The American Anti-Slavery Society hoped both White South and Northerners would be persuaded of the inhumanity of slavery.

The group sent lecturers throughout the north to persuade people of the cruelty of slavery. The speakers wanted to persuade people that slavery was unethical, impious and therefore forbidden. The 'American Anti-Slavery' Movement has also attacked the U.S. House with calls for an end to slavery. The Gag rule states that Congress will not accept any petitions from people from the United States. Instead of 'addressing the slavery issue', Congress imposed a "gag rule."

By comparison to prior groups, members of the 'American Anti-Slavery Society' advocated for an immediate end to slavery. Most of the members of society have sought the same political, economic and social rights as white people for African Americans. William Lloyd Garrison quickly became the chief of the 'American Anti-Slavery Movement'. Maybe before the civil war Garrison was the most vocal and best known adversary to slavery. The organization has attracted over 150,000 members under his leadership .
