Kalpana Chawla's remains were identified along with the rest of the crew members and returned to her family in India for cremation in a traditional Hindu ceremony.
Chawla died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster which occurred on February 1, 2003 when the Columbia disintegrated over Texas during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, with the death of all of seven crew members, shortly before it was scheduled to conclude its 28th mission, STS-107.

I wrote a very long and detailed answer about what happened to the crew in general based mostly on the crew survivability study NASA released in 2008. It's more than a little disturbing and I have no urge to write it all over again. If you care to read that answer, it'll tell you more than you probably wanted to know.
