There were various causes for the Revolt of 1857. Political, social, economic, military and other factors . The atmosphere was filled with an anti-British feeling . The episode of the greased cartridges provided the spark to this revolt.

The 'Enfield Rifle' introduced by the British in the army required a  cartridge which had a greased paper cover. This paper had to be bitten off before the cartridge was loaded into the rifle . The grease used in the paper was made of beef and pig fat.

This angered both the Hindu and the Muslim sepoys as both the religious communities felt that their religions belief were disrespected. This worked as a spark for the Mutiny .
