the immediate cause of the revolt of 1857 was the issue of greased cartridges introduced by the British government which the Indian sepoys refused to use.

The British had published a new rifle called Enfield rifle which had a cartridge and the cartridge was to be bitten of with mouth . That cartridge was made of beef and cow fat and the Hindus and Muslims thought that it was beyond their religion . This was the immediate cause of the revolt of 1857
