The heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo, shortly before the assault by Bosnian student Gavrilo Prinzip. The immediate cause of World War I that made the aforementioned items come into play (alliances, imperialism, militarism, nationalism) was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. Immediate Cause .

On 28 th June , 1914 , the heir to the throne of Austria Hungary , Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated at Sarajevo , the capital of Bosnia .

The assassination was organized by a secret society called Black Hand or the Union of Death .

Their motive was to unite all Serbians to form a single Serbian state.

Austria served an ultimatum on Serbia demanding eleven demands.

As Serbia did not accept all demands , Austria declared the War on Serbia.

Soon all countries joined the War.

This was the immediate cause.
