The greased cartridges supplied for the new Enfield Rifles was theimmediate cause for the mutiny. 2. In 1857 Indian soldiers were given greased catridges which were to be bitten with one's teeth before they could be fired.It was suspected that these catridges were coated with fat of cows and pigs.Indian soldier were angry over it and they refused to use those catridges.they thought that this a deliberate attack on their religions This became the immediate cause of the revolt of 1857
