The obvious answer to this question is the breakup of the Soviet Union, preceded by the fall of the Communist puppet regimes of Eastern Europe. But a less obvious answer is the beginning of the breakup of a number of nations. A direct consequence, besides the breakup of the Soviet Union, was the breakups of Czechslovakia and Yugoslavia, having been held together solely by their Communist regimes.
But further afield, breakups in Ethiopia and Sudan, and the disintigration of Somalia, were all influenced by the end of the Cold War. Centrifugal forces have gained strength in many other countries, including the United States, and I think that most of them have at least gained inspiration from the events at the end of the Cold War.
The nuclear arms race between the United States and the USSR came to an end, and both countries significantly reduced their nuclear weapons.
