What was the impact of land revenue settlement on the peasant
Answers
The impact of land revenue settlement on the peasant:
The land revenue systems introduced by the British rule included the Permanent Settlement, the Ryotwari, and the Mahalwari systems.
In all these systems, the land revenue rate was fixed at very high rates due to over assessment by the company to maximize their income in all these settlements. This made it very tough for the zamindars, cultivators, and peasants to pay.
The villagers had to pay high land rents to the zamindars and so they resorted getting loans from moneylenders which made them toil in debts forever. Their condition became further worse if the crops fail due to adverse weather conditions. The peasants often ended up in nonpayment of dues, mounting debts, and finally dispossession of their land.
