A genocide took place in 1990 and continued for the next few years, in which the Hutu-led government forces killed several thousands of Tutsis. Tutsis were Ugandan refugees who had fled Uganda, following Hutu revolt against colonisation in 1959. The Tutsis retaliated to the massacre of 1990 by killing several thousand Hutu people.
The surprising fact here is that both communities speak the same Bantu language and mostly follow Christianity. It is thought that their differences stemmed from class conflict between the two.
