26 January has been celebrated as Republic Day in India since 1950, when the country adopted its own constitution.
The nation achieved independence on 15 August 1947, but its laws were based on the modified British Government of India Act 1935 until this event.
The constitution was drafted by a committee chaired by Dr B.R. Ambedkar.
This day marks when India stopped being a British dominion, and became a republic instead. Dr Rajendra Prasad was then elected the first President of the sovereign state, taking over from
- C.Rajagopalachari or Rajaji, who had been India's first governor-general from June 1948 to January 1950.
26 January was declared India's 'Independence Day' by Mahatma Gandhi when the Congress adopted the purna swaraj declaration at its Lahore session in 1930.
- The party continued to celebrate it thus until 1950.
The signing of the constitution on the same day respects the wishes of thousands of Indian freedom fighters, who wanted the date to mark total freedom from the Raj.
