Undoubtedly, African young people are a political force. In Senegal, Burkina Faso, Togo, Niger, South Africa & others, the Arab Springs and other democratic demonstrations, opposition and revolt nothing more reveals this truth than in modern times.

Explanation:

  • Political systems in Africa have been organized around elderly people during pre colonial times and have been assisted by elderly councils and by the authorities of the clans and families. In institutions established in such gerantocratic societies, the youths had accepted economic , political & social subordination concerning the opinions, rule,  and advice
  • African young people were both intellectual and field forces in the nationalist and pan-African movements. In 1929, an influential indigenous population from the colony on the Gold Coast, many of whom were lawmakers in the UK and active WASU members, suggested that a "national Youth Assembly should be created for research into the issue of the colony, to think and behave as one people.
  • By 1965, there was an independence for 37 African countries. The Gold Coast, now Ghana, had become the 1st southern states to acquire independence in March 1957. Youth groups dedicated themselves to regimes that guided them to combat colonial rule once independence was achieved. The policies of the new nation states have been based on old ideologies, which evocate families and ideals, of the patriarchs and gerontocrats. Community in the service of the nation-building was a grand project.
  • The political liberalization period lasted until the 90s when a 'third wave' of populism was experienced in several african nations.Youth organizations identified with the "independence fighters' regimes" were either disbanded or suppressed This opened the way for the young volunteers who were dismissed after liberation to recover and to reorganize. Student protests had become powerful and their role as advocates of progressive regimes and politicians has become more critical
  • To order for the new governments to receive adequate food, many young people were recruited for agricultural volunteers to Ghana (Gold Coast) and Ivory Coast. Soon, youth movements, especially students, had criticized 'new regimes' for not discussing successfully the problems faced by everyday citizens. Since the mid-1970s, for instance, NUGS has organized protests against the brutality of the military and the police, high food prices and poor economic management in Ghana. The demonstrations led to the regular locking of campuses and the arrest of student leaders and young demonstrators.
  • Similar movements by young people helped to overturn other governments and issue new constitutions in the 1990s. In Nigeria and in Ghana (Gold Coast), youth, civil society & student groups urged constitutional change and new constitutional drafting to make the path for deeper democracy possible.
