Political clubs became an important rallying point for people who wished to discuss govt. policies and plan their own form of action. The most successful of these clubs were that of the Jacobins, which got its name from the former convent of St Jacob in Paris.
The members of the Jacobin club belonged to the less prosperous sections of society.Example- shopkeepers, servants, pastry cooks etc. Their leader was Maximillian Robespierre. Their dress code was -long striped trousers similar to those worn by dock workers. They were known as sans-culottes.
They were the one who planned insurrection and held king himself hostage for several hours.
