The snake and the mirror is a complex story of self-discovery dated humorously told. The narrator is vain and foolish young man who in the moment of crisis realises that he is worthless and stupid.

The last insult was that moment when he saw that the thief stole EVERYTHING, except that dirty vest! The doctor felt insulted as he was ashamed that theif even got to know that he was the one who never minded to wash that dirty one AT LEAST once! It would be obviously matter of shame for everyone.
He should have before took soap and water and mind it to wash that once so that he could not become a matter of insult..

the doctor narrator had left the room open and gone to his friend's house. some thief got chance and entered the room. he actually stole everything available in the room. but he left the doctor's vest because it was dirty. the thief tried to convince the doctor that he had a high sense of cleanliness. In this way, he insulted the doctor.
the doctor felt insulted that the thief got to know about his cleanliness.
he should have washed the dirty vest at least once so that he would not be embarrassed.
