Portia's father had devised a lottery system in order to choose Portia a husband. There were 3 caskets of gold, silver and lead and one of them contained Portia's portrait (the lead one). In my opinion, Portia's father devised this system to check that the man Portia is going to marry is not attracted to her wealth, because that person would choose gold or silver and denounce lead as a base metal, as done by Prince of Morocco and Arragon.

(P.S.: mark this as brainliest. Thanks!)

As Portia's father was a holy man and has achieved blessings from god, he was very much tensed for her daughter's marriage and hence he organised the lottery of caskets in which the suitors have to choose one casket from the three which would contain Portia's portrait, before choosing the casket the suitor have to take three oaths which says, not to tell anybody which casket he has chosen, not to marry any gírl in his life and to leave Belmont as soon as possible.

The right casket will have Portia's portrait and the suitor which will choose it will marry portia.
