Nana Saheb was the adopted son of Baji Rao II who was the former Peshwar.


Due to the introduction of Doctrine of Lapse by the British government, he was refused to be the legal heir of the Peshwar.


In this context, entire property and kingdom went into the hands of the Britishers.
