Answer:

Explanationhe enormous burden of poverty that Indians carried pinioned them, like a worm impaled on a nail, helpless and immobile in their predicament—a poverty so oppressive and seemingly irredeemable that the people had long given up struggling against it. There was no light at the end of the tunnel. In such an environment of hopelessness there could be no enterprise, and trade and industry, even agriculture, could barely endure, hardly flourish. The best that the people could hope for was to somehow survive, and that was the limit of their dreams.

There is a huge flaw on how we study history in India. Any one who has been to school would have studied Mughal History. What we learn there is the Names of Mughal Kings, when we they ruled, the monuments they built, the wars they won and all their administrative reforms all this is from what their court historians described about them.

It is all so Royal Centric. As if history is only about the Kings who ruled but not about the life and times of millions who lived in this times.

Yes, India was richest nation on Earth during Mughal raj. Like how all the rivers flow into seas, Every piece of bullion be it silver, gold used to flow into India. Every nation used to give their gold, silver to buy from india and India never had to buy anything from outside. So india retained all her wealth and grew rich. Hence Europeans were so desperate to come to India that They used to get wet dreaming about wealth in India.
