The main idea of the play is the status of women in their own house. The housewife serves her family with complete devotion, sincerity and love without even asking for any favour or any love in return. She is however, never given the regard, love, attention or thanks by the family memebers. She is treated as a domestic servant in many families. Instead of being politely requested for a favour, she is ordered to do it.

The idea is worked out by the portrayal of Pearson Family. Mrs Pearson is harassed in the same way. Her daughter Doris, son Cyril, husband George take her advices for granted and have become thoughtless and selfish. The interchange of personalities and the harsh treatment meted out to them by the personality of Mrs.Fitzgerald(in the body of Mrs. Pearson) reforms them and they obey their mother willingly after realising her love and importance for them.

Answer:

J.B. Priestly's play depicts how a mother's attempts are dismissed by her family. It describes how her family members, who work eight-hour shifts every day, regard her despite the fact that she works all day and all week.

Explanation:

The play's focus is the situation of women in their own homes. The housewife serves her family members with entire commitment, sincerity, and affection. She is never given the respect, attention, or credit she deserves. Because of her forbearance and determination to please everyone, she is reduced to the status of unpaid domestic helper in her own home. Instead of being nicely asked, she is told to do a favour. She receives no gratitude in return. The representation of the Pearson family exemplifies the theme. Mrs. Pearson is the victimised mother. Her daughter Doris, son Cyril, and husband George have become thoughtless and selfish in their reliance on her services. The personality interchange and harsh punishment meted out to them by the personality of Mrs. Fitzgerald (in body of Mrs. Pearson) who reforms them and they happily obey the mother.

The key problem raised by the play is that the lady of the house, who functions similarly to an axis, is never accorded appropriate respect, especially if she is an ordinary housewife. The members of her family take her for granted. She works as if she were an unpaid servant.
