The main reason for the 1770 Bengal famine was the policies of the British East India Company. There was failure in the South East monsoon and the company had ordered the destruction of food crops in Bengal to make way for opium poppy cultivation for export reducing food availability. The farmers were also ordered to plant indigo, which as a commercial asset, instead of rice as well as forbidding the hoarding of rice which led to less availability during times of need.
