For French women revolution meant freedom and authority.
- During the French revolution, the most notable demand for women was the freedom to vote and fair pay. They wanted to have the same political rights as men, right to vote, to be elected in assembly and to hold political office.
- Marriage had also significantly altered the legal status of women. Women were ceased to have any separate civil, political or economic presence after marriage.
- A wife became a feme covert under the legal doctrine of coverture and her identity was absorbed into that of her husband, symbolised by her taking of his name.
- To fulfill their demands, women started several political clubs including a revolutionary society.
- However, the clubs were shut down and many influential women were arrested and executed during the reign of Terror. Even though they had not won the right to vote or hold office, but had definitely made their presence known.
