National liberalism was primarily an ideology and a movement of the 19th century. National-liberal goals were the pursuit of individual and economic freedom, as well as national sovereignty.
In the late 19th century, classical liberalism developed into neo-classical liberalism, which argued for government to be as small as possible to allow the exercise of individual freedom. In its most extreme form, neo-classical liberalism advocated social Darwinism.
