the greatest king of the Rashtrakuta dynasty was Amoghavarsha I. As a warrior he was, however, no match with his father Govinda III, but he succeeded in defeating the East-Chalukya kings. Amoghavarsha ruled for a whopping 64 years!

The son of Govinda III, Amoghavarsha I was the greatest king of Rashtrakutas of Karnataka.
- Rashtrakuta Dynasty was founded by Dantidurga, after defeating the Chalukyas of Badami. This empire subsume the modern state of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.
- In 64 years of rule, Amoghavarsha(814-878 A.D) took control of East Chalukya king and set up his empire at the high. He also setup a new capital, Manyakhet, in Karnataka. He was a great patron of education and literature and converted his religion to Jainism by a Jain monk, Jainsena.
- Amoghavarsha was deeply influenced with the policy of maintaining friendly relation with the neighbouring state instead of war.
- Being a patron of Kannada and Sanskrit, he wrote Kavirajmarga which is considered as the legendary poetic literature in Kannada language.
- Because of these very qualities, he was known as "Ashoka of South". He died in 878 AD and was succeeded by Krishna II.
