In the years following World War I, the Khilafat campaign was an agitation by Muslims of India who got allied with the Indian nationalists. This campaign in India was led by two brothers known as Shaukat and Muhammad ʿAlī and by Abul Kalam Azad. The main motive of this movement was to put pressure on the British administration to preserve the government of the Sultan of Ottoman as the Caliph of Islam.
