The system of leasing that was prevalent in late 19th century Georgia which included the leasing of prisoners to private companies or plantations was known as Convict leasing.

This labor system was the source of providing labor to companies and organization which were into coal or iron and also farms.

The only thing that the renters were liable for were to feed the slaves and to also provide them with lodging as well as clothing.
