The colonial economy in Vietnam was initially based on rice cultivation and rubber plantations and mostly plantation crops owned by the 'French' and a 'small Vietnamese businessmen' .
Rail and port facilities were set up to service this sector to ease out transportation and to generate employment through these sectors.
In the rural areas landlordism spread and the standard or the quality of living took a huge hit.
However, this was a failure and it did not ensure sufficient employment, industrialization would be essential to create more jobs for the viatnamese population .
