the revolts of 1857were mostly local
they didn't have hat nationalism qualities
there was not a mass participation in the revolts
the revolt was not a planned one

The nature of revolts prior to the First World War was undirected, localized to smaller areas, leaderless with no popular support... hence, the British were able to suppress these revolts
