As far as I know, almost all big cats (perhaps even [almost] all cats) kill in much the same way. They are all stealth hunters, using either ambush or a stealthy approach to get close to their prey. They all rely on a quick, overwhelming attack, pouncing on the prey from above (leopards, for instance) or overtaking it in a quick rush (the cheetah¹ being the most extreme).

Having overtaken the prey, the kill itself depends on the size of the prey. If the prey item is small, most cats seem to grab it by the neck, severing the spine and killing it quickly. However, for large prey items, this may be very difficult or impossible. Tigers often kill very large animals indeed, such as the massive gaur, a muscle-bound wild cattle that can weigh over 2,000 lbs. Then, the method is usually suffocation, by biting the throat and closing the airways. Occasionally, some big cats (lions?) have been seen instead biting down over the prey’s snout, suffocating it by blocking the mouth and nostrils.

(When I said that almost all big cats kill in much the same way, the exception is the jaguar, which often kills its prey by biting its head; its canine teeth penetrate the skull

I'll add on to Petter's example to note that most cats are capable of killing by breaking the neck/severing the spinal cord, although cheetahs evolved to run and have major oxygen intake support systems - at the cost of their mouth size and power. So they are generally unable to kill in this fashion and instead choke/suffocate their prey.

Also it's not necessarily the cheetah's outright speed that allows it to catch its prey, but their ability to rapidly change directions while chasing it. Which is pretty amazing to watch on the youtubes, check out that tail!

It is not a reflection of man's wanton nature. It is a reflection of his/her vainglorious nature.

Thank You.
