Mahatma Gandhi was a staunch follower of ahimsa and non violence but when in 1922, the people burnt down the police station at the chauri chaura in u. p., where 22 policemen were burnt alive, he was simply stunned. it was not on the peaceful lines as was desired by him. so he called off the movement.
