Abstract
Invited to address the 29th Zionist Congress, held in Jerusalem in February of this year, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, the former president of the World Zionist Organisation and of the World Jewish Congress, spoke of the unfulfilled part of the Zionist programme, eighty years after the first Zionist Congress was convened in Basle, and thirty years after the establishment of the State of Israel. He maintains that Zionism, as conceived by its founders, has still to achieve one of its major aims, which is to safeguard the unique character of the Jewish people and its long history. This, he insists, requires a genuine peace settlement with Israel's Arab neighbours which would make it possible to give priority to the internal front instead of, as at present, having to concentrate on the external front
