Explanation:

Meditations – by Marcus Aurelius

Date read: 4/5/17. Recommendation: 10/10.

A cornerstone of Stoic philosophy, along with Letters from a Stoic by Seneca. It's critical which interpretation you read. I highly recommend the Modern Library version with an introduction by Gregory Hays. It's a short read with some of the most useful insights and aphorisms that money can buy.

Answer:

Explanation:

Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius:

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, a Stoic philosopher and Roman emperor from 161 to 180, lived from 26 April 121 to 17 March 180. He was the last of the five emperors known as the "Five Good Emperors" (the term "Five Good Emperors" was first used by Niccol Machiavelli some 13 centuries later), and he ruled during the Pax Romana, a period of largely tranquilly and stability for the Roman Empire that lasted from 27 BC to 180 AD. In the years 140, 145, and 161, he was the Roman consul.

Marcus Aurelius was well-liked by the Roman populace and did his best to look out for his subjects during tough times like the Antonine Plague. His ability to keep the Empire together during the Parthian War, the Germanic Wars, and the first real pandemic to hit the Roman Empire was his greatest achievement as emperor.

Steve jobs:

Steven Paul Jobs was an American business mogul, industrial designer, media mogul, and investor who lived from February 24, 1955, until October 5, 2011. He served as the co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple as well as Pixar's majority shareholder, the founder, chairman, and CEO of NeXT, and the chairman and majority shareholder of Pixar after that company was acquired by The Walt Disney Company. He and his early business colleague and fellow Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak are widely acknowledged as being among the forerunners of the personal computer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s.

One thing that both Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius and Steve Jobs pointed to that essentially helped them live purposeful lives:

A key text in the Stoic school of thought, alongside Seneca's Letters from a Stoic. Whichever meaning you read, it matters. The Modern Library edition with Gregory Hays' introduction is one that I wholeheartedly endorse. It's a quick read that contains some of the best advice and proverbs money can buy.
