The Chilean Coup of 1973 was an event related to the history of Chile and the Cold War situation. This coup took place following the protracted social and political unrest, between the conservatives that dominated the Chilean Congress against the democratically elected president of Salvador Allende. General Augusto Pinochet, Commander of the Chilean Navy, with US backing to stage a coup against the Salvadoran government Allende. Allende was leader of the Chilean Socialist Party and was elected president in 1970. He then runs the nationalization program of banking, mining, and industrial Chile. This makes the interests of US companies disturbed. The US then masterminded the coup to bring down Allande by holding several Chilean officers. In 1990, under pressure from home and abroad Pinochet was forced to hold presidential elections freely. In this election a civil government was formed. Chile experienced 17 years of military dictatorship (1973-1990) under Augusto Pinochet, which became the cause of the death or loss of 3,000 humans.
