Education in ancient Rome progressed from an informal, familial system of education in the early Republic to a tuition-based system during the late Republic and the Empire. The Roman education system was based on the Greek system – and many of the private tutors in the Roman system were Greek slaves or freedmen.

The policy of education in Roman Empire:

  • The education of Rome was a mixture of the Greek education and the early Roman education, beliefs and practice.
  • The teachers who used to teach were either Greek slaves or they were freed by the Greeks. The education was a private tuition based study. It was quite informal.
  • The Greek and the Roman sculpture were also taught to them. It was vastly a familial system of education. The education was almost compulsory. Everyone was entitled to learn.
