Before Independence India's political divisions were characterised by the following:
a. There existed Princely states ruled by hereditary rulers who accepted British's suzerainty and were in turn granted a degree of autonomy in administrative affairs. For example, Hyderabad, Jammu and Kashmir, Junagadh etc.
b. There were provinces, which were directly controlled and ruled by the British officials , appointed by the Viceroy. For example, Bengal Province, Assam province, Bombay Province etc.
c. The state of Pakistan did not exist before Independence.
