Mahatma Gandhi demanded certain policies to be abolished in a letter to the then Governor General.
One of them was the abolishment of tax on salt. Salt was something that all rich and poor consumed and was one of the basic ingredient of food, laying tax on salt showed the brutal face of the British.
When the Governor General refused, Gandhiji started Satyagraha to Dandi a coastal town in Gujarat in April 1930.
On reaching Dandi, he himself violated the salt tax law and manufactured salt.

there were many reasons behind this March , but this ANSWER will only discuss little explanation on all reasons + the prime reason.
✒ there was a particular tax which the British government imposed on salt which was the reason why people were high on cutting their diet and were extremely disheartened because of this particular tax and the law which prohibited the civilians to manufacture salt themselves
✒ this tax was resulting in tasteless food for the people because it was a common diet for people - some millet balls , an onion and salt.
✒ this tax also was resulting in a drain of Indian economy and its regulation. thence , a revolutionary movement became extremely necessary .
✒ when petitions to end this tax were refused . Gandhiji started a match from the Sabarmati ashram to the Dandi village , famous for coastal salt... there he himself broke the law himself by boiling water and manufacturing salt from it
