1• In Rajasthan there was huge scarcity of water before the opening of Indra Gandhi Canal. The people have to travel a lot of distance for fetching water from rivers,so they collected rainwater in these tanks.
2•The collected rainwater in tank made it extremely reliable source of drinking water when all other sources dried up.
3•The tanks also provided the purest form of drinking water. Many houses In Rajasthan constructed underground rooms adjoining the tanks to beat the summer heat as it would keep the room warm.
