Answer:

The Subsidiary Alliance System was “Non-Intervention Policy” used by Lord Wellesley who was the Governor-General (1798-1805) to establish British Empire in India. According to this system, every ruler in India had to accept to pay a subsidy to the British for the maintenance of British army.

Answer:

 Subsidiary Alliance

The system of Subsidiary Alliance was introduced by Lord Wellesley when he became Governor-general in 1798.

It was a very clever move taken by the British to take advantage of the rivalries among the Indian rulers. They asked the rulers to accept the supremacy of the British and sign a subsidiary treaty with them. In return, the British promised to protect the ruler from internal rebellions and from attacks by his rivals....

  • Benefits of British due to the system of Subsidiary Alliance are :-

The subsidiary arrangement was very advantageous to the British. They could maintain a large army at the cost of the Indian rulers. They indirectly controlled the defence and foreign affairs of the protected ally, and could overthrow the ruler and annex his territories whenever they wished to. Also, the 'Resident' could interfere in the internal affairs of the kingdom to further the interests of the Company.

On the other hand, the Indian ruler who accepted the Subsidiary Alliance became totally dependent on the British. He could no longer take decisions independently. The high cost of maintaining the British army and the constant demands of the Resident also drained the treasury.

The Company signed the first Subsidiary treaty with the Nizam of Hyderabad in 1798.
